Update on Special Education Services: (Message from the District) March 19, 2020 Dear families of students who receive special education services, The Issaquah School District and the Special Services Department continues to prioritize the health and safety of student, staff and the community as we navigate these unprecedented times. As the District works to support our families and community, we want to assure you that equitably meeting the needs of our students who receive special education services is at the forefront of our considerations.
The federal government and the state of Washington are currently developing guidance regarding the provision of special education services during school closures and any permissible changes to service delivery models as a result of COVID-19. We are monitoring the development of this guidance carefully and we are committed to partnering with you through frequent communication.
While we are not providing educational services to students during the school closures, staff will be providing weekly resources and optional education-related activities. If you have questions or concerns about these resources or activities, please reach out to your student’s IEP team (general education teacher, special education teacher, SLP, OT/PT), who will be posting updates and responding to email throughout the school closures.
In addition, based upon the current guidance, your student’s case manager will contact you about participating in any upcoming or previously scheduled re-evaluation meetings andannual IEP meetings. To comply with current health restrictions, any such meetings will be held via phone or video conference at a mutually agreed-upon date and time. However, if you prefer to hold an in-person meeting, you may request to delay any proposed team meeting until your student’s school is back in session.
The District will be providing ongoing communication to keep you informed as the public health situation improves and/or available federal and state guidance is updated. Please see our website for additional information, available at https://www.issaquah.wednet.edu. As always, we are appreciative of our community and stand with you in support of your children during this very challenging time.
Sincerely, Dana Bailey Executive Director of Student Services
